Viewpoints Movement in Puppetry
Join Katy for her most popular puppetry workshop! Presented multiple times at the National Puppetry Festival and for other leading organizations, this course is perfect for performers and directors seeking a deeper and broader understanding of puppetry.
Viewpoints is a powerful, freeing theatrical technique that helps create dynamic stories and movement onstage, especially in devised work. It’s essential for puppeteers, directors, devisers, and movers who are ready to break old habits and spark fresh creativity.
Participants explore the nine Viewpoints—Spatial Relationship, Kinesthetic Response, Shape, Gesture, Repetition, Architecture, Tempo, Duration, and Topography—learning to move organically and instinctively, without getting stuck in their heads or "performing."
The workshop begins with simple, puppet-free exercises, then transitions to working with blank puppets made from scarves or plastic bags, encouraging pure exploration without any limits on character or form.
As Anne Bogart, creator of Viewpoints, put it: “It was instantly clear that this approach to generating movement for the stage was applicable to creating viscerally dynamic moments of theatre with actors and other collaborators.”
This movement-based workshop is ideal for performers, puppeteers, and even young artists, unlocking new character traits, organic movement, and a deeper connection between puppeteer and puppet. Highly recommended for theatre troupes and companies ready to integrate puppetry into their productions, this workshop can be booked as a stand-alone experience or paired with Katy’s professional puppetry consultation services.
Ages: 10 and up. Please note: Offered either for adults or children, but not as a combined session.
Pricing:
-
$200 for a one-hour session,
-
$400 for a two-hour session (recommended)
-

3D to 2D Pattern Making
Join Katy for a hands-on 4-hour workshop where you’ll learn how to take a 3D object and turn it into a 2D pattern—an incredibly useful skill for any puppet builder! With this technique, you can use an existing object or one you've sculpted, then transform it into a foam fabricated replica. We’ll also discuss how to change the size and dimensions of your sculpt.
We’ll start with a simple object, like a cone, to learn the basics. Then we’ll move on to sculpting our own heads from clay, masking tape, and foil. After that, you’ll learn how to create a pattern from your sculpt, and use that pattern to cut pieces from foam. Finally, we’ll put it all together in foam, and you’ll leave with your very own original pattern and foam head!
